Become a Member of the Citizen Police Academy

The Quincy Police Department believes its mission to serve the community can best be achieved if the citizens of the community are active participants with the Police Department in those efforts. Critical to the success of this shared responsibility are well-informed citizens who have an awareness of the mission, resources, practices, and services of the Police Department.

Why is QPD providing this course to the public?

The implementation of the QPD Citizen Police Academy is a significant step toward achieving the following goals.

  1. To better inform the public about the Police Department and related law enforcement practices, issues, and concerns.
  2. To enhance bilateral communications with the community by enhancing the public's knowledge on how, with whom, and when to communicate with the Police Department.
  3. Establish a trained group of individuals with a strong sense of citizen responsibility in the community supported with information on crime prevention and neighborhood crime repression.
  4. Create an important group of police supporters and contacts in the community that can be utilized in several situations both in terms of proactive as well as reactive police initiatives.
What is the Citizen Police Academy?

The CPA is a ten-week instructional course held one evening a week from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Participants will get to know their Police Department, express their views, and have hands-on practicals to let the class participant experience activities conducted by police officers. This course will provide citizens with a basic general knowledge of all aspects of the police profession.

Where is it being held?

The course will be held one evening a week from 6 pm - 9 pm at City Hall, 730 Maine Street, except for one class and an optional firearm outing at the RKBA Gun Range.

Who instructs the classes and what do they teach?

Quincy Police Officers along with representatives from other agencies instruct classes that are related to their respective fields.

Is there a fee to attend?

No, there are no fees to attend the course.

Do I graduate?

There will be a graduation. Citizens who attend the course will receive a certificate of achievement. 

No tests are administered.

Will I be trained to make arrests?

No, but you will be educated on Crime Prevention and what your options are concerning arrest procedures.

What are the requirements to attend?

You must be 18 years of age or older, own property in Quincy, work or live in Quincy, or attend school in Quincy. You must also complete a Citizen Police Academy application, pass a background check and at the first class you will have to sign a liability waiver form. 

Will I be notified whether accepted or not?

Yes, but keep in mind that class sizes and the number of academies are limited. Two academy sessions will be conducted each year (spring and fall), with 12-16 participants attending each session. If you don't make the first academy be patient, your application will be kept in the order it was received.
